In the painting School of Athens by Rafaello Sanzio
there is a figure in white looking out at the viewer.
The figure represents Hypatia of Alexandria, noted
for her beauty and her brains, a celibate lady who
was done to death in a dreadful way by Christians.
However, R had to change her face to that of a man
because of Church objections…
When I first looked closely at this painting years ago
I thought – “That’s me; I know that’s me!”
